Twas the Night Before Christmas

by Clement C. Moore

As a parent I can look back and say that all the reading we did with our children contributed greatly to their school success.  They are all very good students, which I think has a direct correlation to reading, but more importantly they all love to do it.

So my mission is to instill a love of reading in every child.  This love will serve them well in work and in pleasure! Reading holds the key to opening their mind as well as doors in their future. I think Fredrick Douglas said it best, “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free!”

Why I love reading...

Can you spot me in the picture on the left? How about the picture below? I grew up in a family that loved to read. Being read to by my dad is one of my most precious memories! Reading the newspaper and trips to the library were part of our daily lives. My mom’s philosophy is a day without reading is a day wasted!

Back then I did not realize the importance of reading, I just knew its enjoyment. Only when I began my college education did I realize the importance of reading, its impact on all other subjects and its key role in school success.

Fast forward to parenthood. With a love for reading and the knowledge of its importance, my husband and I began to read to our own children. What started out as a daily ritual before nap and bedtime became a precious time for all of us. As our children became independent readers we continued to read out loud together, taking turns reading chapter books to one another. To this day our family still enjoys this pass time.

Listening to my dad read stories from My Book House.
